A History of the Shops in Highgate
June 13, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm
A History of the Shops of Highgate
by Marc Haynes and the HLSI Archive team
The talk will cover the never-before-told history of Highgate’s shops – from the very first Highgate business supplying its wares to the whole of Roman Britain, all the way through to the present day High Street.
Along the way, we’ll meet murderous body snatchers, art hoaxers, IRA bombers, pharmacists dealing drugs to poets, Peter Sellers’s mother, the estate agent who wrote the first history book on Highgate, a bookshop owner immortalised in a rude poem, Rod Stewart’s family newsagent, a criminal hypnotist, and quack doctors selling medicines supposedly used by the Pharaohs.
Additionally, the talk will be illustrated with many rarely seen photographs from the HLSI Archives, the majority never published – from the lost parade of shops along North Hill to the demolition of Highgate’s only cinema. Along with rarely seen images, we’ll also hear the recorded voice of Highgate’s pre-war butcher and see remarkable 1940s film footage from inside the Corner Shop.
