Highgate Film Society: DESTRY RIDES AGAIN (Free to all)
September 27 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
USA 1939, 95 mins (dir. George Marshall) starring Marlene Dietrich, James Stewart, Mischa Auer, Brian Donlevy.
Based on the 1930 novel by Max Brand, the famed Western writer, Destry Rides Again includes all the classic ingredients of a classic Western movie and set the standard for all such films to come. Destry (James Stewart), a mild-mannered deputy who doesn’t like guns, although an expert marksman, is called to restore order to the hopelessly corrupt frontier town of Bottleneck. Though reluctant to undertake such an enormous task, he’s soon roped into action after meeting the seductive Frenchy (Marlene Dietrich), an alluring saloon girl. In 1996, Destry Rides Again was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’.
