January 17, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
France 2017, 114 mins (directed and written by Francois Ozon) starring Paula Beer, Pierre Niney, Anton Von Lucke, Ernst Stotzner.
Anna is a bereft young German woman whose fiancé, Frantz, was killed in the trenches of World War I. Adrien, a French veteran of the war, makes a mysterious appearance in her town, placing flowers on Frantz’s grave. Adrien’s presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany’s defeat, yet Anna gradually becomes closer to the handsome and melancholy young man, as she learns of his deep friendship with Frantz. A sumptuous period film beautifully photographed in melancholy black and white with flash back moments in colour. A masterfully told story of romance, grief and guilt featuring two remarkable lead performances from newcomers. This is a graceful and gripping story with a timely exploration of healing and forgiveness across European borders.
