This is a documentary, made by the director of Peggy Guggenheim, Art Addict, which we showed in an earlier season. It is about the Academy Award winning designer Cecil Beaton, a renowned photographer, artist and set designer. The film explores his life and career and is full of extracts from his diaries and letters, and film of his early life and interviews with his many well-known friends. Beaton was the son of a timber merchant and was totally unacademic. While at Cambridge he did not attend any lectures, so not surprisingly left without a degree. He managed to secure work as a photographer of the Bright Young Things in the 20s, went to the States, and became a war photographer in the 40s. He was also a favourite of the Royal Family and took many pictures of the Queen Mother and the Coronation. He is perhaps most famous for his settings and costumes for Gigi, My Fair Lady and Coco.
