Tony Buckingham, his wife Carla, and their acting company journey through India performing Shakespearian plays. When their daughter Lizzie loses her heart to playboy Sanju after a show, his film star lover Manjula tries to disrupt their relationship. The Buckinghams must protect their daughter emotionally, while facing the fact that their plays are falling out of style in post-colonial India. The film was loosely based on Geoffrey Kendal’s touring Shakespearean Company. In real life Shashi Kapoor married Jennifer Kendal, Felicity’s elder sister.
