Lady Samantha Feilding is four times great niece of Lady Mary Feilding and President of the Mary Feilding Guild.
Dr Anne Summers is an historian, former manuscripts curator at the British Library and honorary research fellow at Birkbeck College
In 19th-century Britain philanthropy was often the only way women could exercise influence in society. That influence was profound.
Lady Samantha Feilding will talk about Lady Mary Feilding, her family and her work and setting up the Guild. Anne Summers will describe what she calls some of the ‘ripples in the pond’ – the importance of Lady Feilding’s friends and acquaintances, their own friends and acquaintances – and with some thoughts on women’s voluntary action after the vote was won and, in principle, women were freer to enter other fields.
