‘An illness of various shapes and horrible’: some reflections on epilepsy
Ann Jacoby’s title comes from the writings of one of the most celebrated of the ancient Greek physicians, Aretaeus of Cappadocia in the 1st century BC. She will provide a brief guide to the history of understanding of epilepsy from Aretaeus and his contemporaries to the present, and how that history continues to influence its present-day meaning and implications.
Ann Jacoby is a medical sociologist and Emeritus Professor of Public Health and Policy, University of Liverpool.
