LECTURE Britain, Europe and this Mess
October 9 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Martyn Bond, Honorary Senior Fellow, Regent’s University London
“Brexit is a problem that simply will not go away. The clock is ticking, and we may yet be asked to vote again before the deadline for a deal at end of March next year. To understand just where we are now and what lies in store over the next six months, Martyn will try to explain what the negotiations are really about, what the trade offs are, and what sort of deal – hard, soft or none at all – is worth the cost.
Martyn brings a lifetime’s experience of European affairs to this timely subject, and has spoken to HLSI on European issues before. His first degree is from Cambridge, his doctorate from Sussex, and he also studied in Hamburg. Initially trained in the BBC, he went on to be a lecturer in West European Studies at the New University of Ulster in the 1970s, and was later BBC correspondent in Berlin for a number of years during the Cold War. He has published books on the two Germanies and on the Council of Europe, and has just finished a political biography of one of the early pioneers of European unity, Count Coudenhove Kalergi.”
