France/Turkey/Germany/Qatar 2015, 97 mins (dir. Deniz Gamze Ergüven) starring Günes Sensoy, Doga Doguslu, Elit Iscan, Tugba Sunguroglu.
When five orphaned Turkish sisters living in a remote village are seen playing on the beach with male pupils, their scandalised family, led by their grandmother, with whom they live, and their uncle, decide to remove them from school and confine them to home while marriages are arranged for the older girls. The sisters each respond in different ways to their pre-arranged fates, sometimes with tragic consequences. This is an outstanding film which gives an unforgettable picture of rural Turkish society. In 2015 it won the Label Europa Cinemas award at the Cannes Film Festival, and also César awards for best original screenplay and best first film.
