Science Meeting – Challenges and Opportunities of Doing Science in the 21st Century
December 6 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Dr Steven Hill, Research England
While the 20th century can be portrayed as a period of science-driven progress, in the early years of the 21st the idea of science as an unchallenged and unchallengeable force for good has become more contested. And science itself is looking fragile, with suggested crises of reproducibility and integrity. Maybe science is just fake news… In this talk the speaker will consider the position of science in the 21st century, reflecting on the challenges that scientific research faces. He will argue that, while there are undoubted problems, there are also opportunities offered for a new, more networked and relevant science to bring even greater benefits to society than in the past.
