The World New Made: figurative painting in the 20th century
October 10, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Timothy Hyman, RA, figurative painter, writer, curator, author of The World New Made: Figurative Painting in the Twentieth Century.
In this richly-illustrated talk, Timothy Hyman will assemble those often-marginalised artists who, although aware of abstraction, chose instead to create a new imagery of narrative and confession, sexuality and social criticism. Through their own testimony he reinterprets well-known painters such as Beckmann and Chagall, Kahlo and Guston, but also foregrounds less familiar figures: Charlotte Saloman and Bhupen Khakhar, Marsden Hartley and Ken Kiff, Alice Neel and Red Grooms.
