Italian Conversation (Beginners)

This course is for students with no or little knowledge of the language, and who wish to learn to communicate in everyday situations. Basic vocabulary, structures, and grammar will be covered. Topics will include: personal information, shopping, directions, ordering food and drink, booking a hotel room, travelling, and other practical areas. Students will also learn to talk about home, family, work, and leisure, including events from the past, and plans for the future. Grammar and cultural aspects will be incorporated into every topic.

The maximum size of the class is 12. Speaking will be the main activity, and students will be encouraged to participate in role-play, pair and group work, small presentations, games, and exercises. Other activities will include reading and listening comprehension, written exercises. Italian will be used as much as possible, but grammatical and cultural explanations will be given in English.

We will use: L.Ziglio, G.Rizzo: Nuovo Espresso 1-Alma edizioni (ISBN 978- 88-6182-318-1)

Italian 2 (Intermediate)

This course is for those who have already studied the language for two or three years and are familiar with basic vocabulary and grammar. It is aimed at students who wish to consolidate their existing language knowledge and develop it further by expanding their vocabulary and grammar and improve pronunciation. Emphasis will be on improving spoken Italian as well as reading and grammar. A number of different texts will be discussed, covering social and cultural aspects of the country.

The maximum size of the class is 12. Active student participation is encouraged throughout, through conversation, reading, written exercises and role play.

Grammatical topics will be included in each session. We will use: T.Marin, S.Magnelli: Nuovo Progetto Italiano 2Libro dello studente, Edilingua ( ISBN 978-960-6632-76-1) and Nuovo Progetto Italiano 2 Quaderno degli esercizi nuova edizione, Edilingua ( ISNB 978-960-693-119-2). Other texts will be handed out during the course. Further reading will be recommended.

Italian 3 (Higher Intermediate)

This course is for students who are fairly confident in Italian conversation, and who would have studied the language for at least four years. It is aimed at students who wish to practise conversation, develop their vocabulary further, and improve their grammar and pronunciation.

The maximum class size is 12. Students will be encouraged to participate actively, through conversation, discussions and presentations. Italian will be spoken throughout the classes.

There is no set text, and students will receive material reflecting social and cultural aspects of the country. Grammatical issues will be addressed as needed. You will be asked to buy a novel.

Italian 4 (Advanced)

This course is for students who are confident in speaking Italian and who would have studied it for at least five to six years. It is aimed at students who wish to practise conversation and want to continue improving their knowledge of Italian.

The maximum class size is 12. Students will participate actively though discussions and presentations. Italian will be spoken throughout. Students will receive materials on various topics. Sometimes we deal with grammatical issues if and when they arise.

There is no textbook, but we will buy a novel to read each term.
