Spanish for Beginners

This course is for those with no or little previous knowledge of Spanish, who want to communicate effectively in a range of everyday situations. Topics include: personal information, shopping, directions, ordering food & drink, booking a hotel room, travelling, and other areas of interest. Students will also learn to talk about home, family, work, and leisure, including events from the past, and plans for the future. Grammar and cultural aspects will be incorporated into every topic. The present tense will be the main tense, including ser & estar, regular, irregular, reflexive, pronominal, & radical changing verbs, although other past and future tenses will be introduced to students as needed.

Maximum class size is 12. Speaking is the main activity, and students are encouraged to participate in role-plays, pair and group work, small presentations, games, and exercises. Other activities include reading & listening comprehension, translation and written homework using the book and handouts provided by the teacher. The target language will be used as much as possible, but grammatical and cultural explanations will be in English. The book we will be using isSueños World Spanish1 (BBC) ISBN 0-563-47246-4

Spanish 2 (Intermediate)

This course is for those who have some basic familiarity with Spanish, having studied for a minimum of one academic year or equivalent, and who want to communicate effectively in a range of topics from everyday situations to home, family, work and leisure, as well as events from the past and plans for the future. Students will be expected to have some knowledge of the present tense, including: ser & estar, regular, irregular, reflexive, pronominal & radical changing verbs, which will be revised and practised as needed. Topics covered will include: holidays, what you usually do,
and what you did, telling your life story, talking about history, saying what you used to do & what people were like, contrasting the present with the past, making comparisons, buying clothes and souvenirs, describing what has happened, recalling childhood memories, and talking about plans & intentions. The past tenses will be the main tenses explored and practised including the preterite, the imperfect and the past perfect. The future will also be introduced.

Spanish 3 (Higher Intermediate)

This course is for those who are confident with basic Spanish conversation, who want to improve their fluency and accuracy when talking about a wide range of subjects, and have studied for five to six years or equivalent, or for those who have studied in the past, and want to refresh and continue to practice after a break in their learning. Students will be expected to have some knowledge of present, past, future, conditional, imperative and subjunctive tenses, although these will be revised and practised as needed.

Maximum class size is 12. Students are encouraged to bring personal, social, cultural and topical news to the classroom, and make presentations about them. Topics for conversation will include: plays, films, exhibitions, current affairs, and personal interests students may want to talk about. Students will be asked at the beginning of each term if there is anything they want to, or feel they need to, revise, regarding grammar or any area of interest they would like to explore. Speaking is the main activity, and it is done entirely in the target language. Other activities include group discussion and debates, reading and translating a book, which students will have to purchase, and newspaper articles which will be provided by the teacher.

Spanish 4 (Advanced)

This course is for those who have a high level of understanding and confidence in spoken and written Spanish who want to maintain and improve fluency and accuracy when talking about a wide variety of subjects. They would either have studied for about seven academic years or equivalent, or have done an A-level, or have lived in a Spanish speaking country. Students will be expected to have knowledge of all tenses including present, past, future, conditional, imperative and subjunctive, although these will be revised and practised as needed. Maximum class size is 12. Conversations and presentations will be the main class activities, entirely in the target language. Students will be asked at the beginning of each term if there is anything they want to revise regarding grammar or any other area of interest they would like to explore. They will be encouraged to bring personal, social, cultural, and topical news to the classroom, and make presentations about them. Topics for conversation will include current affairs in England and Spain, as well as films, plays, exhibitions, and personal interests students may want to talk about. Students will be encouraged to read newspapers and other material for class discussion.

The book we will be reading is El tiempo entre costuras by María Duenas.
